    Member Defence

    As members of Living Rent, one of the key ways we support each other is through Member Defence. In each branch, Member Defence Teams work with members to secure improvements to their housing situations using direct collective action. We aren’t trained lawyers, but we have built expertise through our own experiences as renters and by working with each other to address various housing issues and to defend their own and their neighbour's right to a good, secure, affordable home. This means that members are at the forefront of fighting to address their own issues, protect themselves and their neighbourhoods.

    Using direct collective action, member defence teams across the country have resisted evictions, won tens of thousands of pounds worth of repairs, rent reductions and compensation for our members. We have shown the power of an organised movement, fighting for people's rights.

    Your local member defence teams:

    There are member defence teams in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and neighbourhood teams in the Wyndford, Shawlands, Pollokshields, Govanhill, Govan, Dennistoun, Partick, Leith, Muirhouse and Gorgie/Dalry. What the member-led teams do:

    • Sign-post to professional advice and support 

    • Support members in researching, planning and executing campaigns to secure improvements to their housing situation

    • Use diverse tactics to pressure landlords and housing providers to fight for members' demands

    Living Rent Member Defence teams cannot support with every case and they may signpost to other organisations. Member defence teams mostly address:

    • Repairs and maintenance

    • Unjust charges, fees or deposit theft

    • Eviction

    • Harassment

    • Rent reductions

    • Unfair service charges

    Neighbourhood Eviction Resistance

    Living Rent members are working tirelessly to stop Covid-19 evictions. The Coronavirus Act 2020 'eviction ban' did not stop landlords from pursuing court orders nor did it prevented sheriff officers from carrying out those court orders. The current full eviction ban in tier 3 and 4 areas, won by Living Rent, is set to come to an end soon. A wave of evictions is on the horizon.

    Together Living Rent members can turn the tide. When evictions are set to go ahead, we need well-organised community support, on the ground and at the door, to make the sheriff officers turn around.

    GHA: RESUME REGULAR CLOSE CLEANING IN DENNISTOUN

    Since the beginning of the pandemic Glasgow Housing Association, owned by Wheatley Group, stopped essential close cleaning services whilst continuing to charge tenants for this service, through their rent.

    As this pandemic has evolved, we have learned that ensuring appropriate sanitation is crucial to stopping the spread of the virus. Despite this, GHA did not resume this vital service when lockdown restrictions eased.

    Residents of Wellpark, alongside residents across the east end of Glasgow have been let down by GHA. Only through tenants organising, coupled with press attention, did GHA engage with their tenants' concerns and restarted an irregular, sub-par cleaning service. With a second lockdown underway, sub-par is not good enough.

     

    We, the undersigned, demand that GHA commit to;

    1. carrying out a weekly cleaning service in their closes in the east end of the city,

    2. supplying residents and tenants with a cleaning schedule of when their close is due to be cleaned.

     

    This way, residents are kept safe, with clean closes during the second wave of the pandemic. Such practices are necessary and they will save lives.

    Other housing associations have made the same commitment to their tenants, why can’t GHA?

    Dennistoun

    A new branch in the East End of Glasgow, covering the G31 postcode. Ready to work on defending Dennistoun from sky-rocketing rents, uncleaned streets and closes and dodgy landlords in the social and private rented sector. After some solid door knocking, the branch has been taking GHA to task around cleansing and high rents.

    Whether organising in December to re-instate close cleaning or in January and February to ask GHA to freeze rents, members are out and ready. Dinnae step on Dennistoun: no rain or snow will stop us!
