Come to our meeting on Saturday 3rd October, 10am-12noon, at Augustine United Church, to help shape our strategy to force the Scottish Government to protect mid-market (MMR), build-to-rent (BtR), and Intermediate-market (IMR) tenants.
The government has failed MMR, BTR, and IMR tenants. In November last year, MSPs in parliament voted to pass the Housing Bill and with it, rent controls. This bill would not exist without the organised work of Living Rent members. It caps rent increases between tenancies, clamps down on disrepair, and strengthens joint tenancy rights. Shamefully, MMR, IMR, and BtR tenants are completely excluded from these protections, leaving us vulnerable to unaffordable rent hikes.
We have had victories in MMR/BtR/IMR blocks before. In Granton in 2024, C-urb mid-market tenants went to action and won hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of repairs to their windows and parking shutters. In July 2025, Govan tenants of Water Row Company reversed a 49% rent increase and forced an apology and rent repayment from the landlord. In August this year, Platform tenants in Leith had 50 members storm their landlord's offices and stopped a 25% rent increase, keeping around £235k in their pockets, and mid-market tenants in Bridgeton secured hundreds of pounds each in compensation after Touchstone failed to carry out urgent repairs. These wins show that when we come together, we are able to have justice served, even against multi-millionaire landlords. But we don't want to keep fire-fighting, it's up to us to force the Scottish Government to bring in long-term security for these tenancy types!
