Last year, after years of work from organised tenants, the government passed the Housing Bill and with it rent controls. Though this was a huge step forward, the landlord lobby undermined key parts of the bill ensuring the rent controls are riddled with loopholes. As a result it will be two years before any tenants feel any benefits of rent controls, leaving two years for landlords to hike up rents. Even when they come in, huge numbers of properties have been made exempt, leaving too many tenants without protections.

It’s clear that our political process is betraying us.

So we’re going fight back. We're to go back to basics. We are going to strengthen our movement. We are going to build a movement of people who are angry about their rent increases, who are angry about their landlords, who are angry about being evicted. 

And here’s how we are going to do it. Every week, in branches across our union, we are going to go out on the doors, talk to our neighbours, map our rent levels in our neighbourhoods, identify the worst landlords and grow our movement of people who are angry about the state of our housing and want to fight for change.

And then, once we have built this anger and grown our movement, we will hold mass meetings and plan for how we use our power to fight for a housing system that works for us! And on the cards right now? Withholding our rent increases, and mass eviction resistance!...
