The Gorgie Dalry branch of Living Rent celebrated their huge win of stopping the old Tynecastle High school being turned into unaffordable student accommodation.
The construction of PBSAs in Edinburgh over the past decade had driven rents sky high, put a strain on local services and compounded the lack of affordable housing for everyone in Scotland.
Not only that but the site had been deemed unsafe for mainstream housing. The fact that this development was even considered despite the environmental issues with the site shows that students are seen as cash cows by developers and authorities - this needs to change.
The Gorgie Dalry branch is pushing for the space to be used for social housing, not expensive student accommodation. The new proposal needs to ensure community interests are listened to.
