Nae Hoose Left Lyin!

Fill Aberdeen's Empty Council Homes

Right now, 1,816 council homes lie empty across Aberdeen City - the highest across all of Scotland.

It takes Aberdeen City Council 280 days to turn around a council home between tenancies while the national average is just 60 days.

As of December 2024 there were 6,654 households on Aberdeen City Council’s Housing list. Filling our empty council homes would reduce this by up to 27% and bring in a minimum of £6m revenue per year that the council are currently missing out on.

Something is seriously wrong with how Aberdeen City Council are managing our housing system.

Aberdeen’s homeless services have been declared as at ‘risk of systemic failure’ by the housing regulator and the amount of children in temporary accommodation has more than doubled since 2023.

Despite claiming that reducing council staff is a cost-cutting measure, outsourcing trades work to external contractors causes significant delays and means the council miss out on revenue from homes left lying empty far longer than they should.

The council can no longer bury their head in the sand and must urgently fill our empty homes. They owe the people of Aberdeen city an open dialogue about what they're doing to tackle our housing crisis.

It does not have to be this way. Join our call to demand the council;

  • Reduce the turnaround time between council tenancies by at least 6 weeks.
  • Double the amount of empty council homes filled per month from 30 to 60.
  • Bring necessary trades back in-house instead of relying on external contractors.
  • Publish a monthly public report on how many empty council homes there are and what is being done about the housing crisis.
