  • Organisational skills: Care and Power

As we build our power, fight for the issues that we care about and make real what previously was seen as impossible, we can forget how to take care of ourselves and burn-out. Here, we will look at both individual self-care practices as well as collective ones, in order to build the long-term movement that we need to achieve the future we deserve.

  • Shawlands Branch Launch

Over the past year, a group of local tenants and residents has been working together to build a Shawlands branch of Living Rent. Whether that work has meant resisting evictions, holding landlords to account or campaigning for the reopening of the Langside library and Langside Halls, the branch has set out to prove the power of collective action in winning change for our community.

Shawlands members have won a number of victories already but that’s only the beginning.

Join us on Sunday 11th July, 12pm for the Living Rent Shawlands Branch Launch. Whether you're a private tenant, social tenant or homeowner, whether you've stayed in Shawlands for decades or you've just moved here, it's up to all of us to fight for everything our area needs. When we come together to tackle the issues we share, we're so much stronger for it.

The branch launch will celebrate some of the victories won so far, elect a committee to lead up the fight, and set out our vision for the months and years to come.

It will be held online using Zoom with some in person gathering afterwards (more on this soon)

Anyone who lives in Shawlands is welcome. Let's build neighbourhood power.

Block by block, street by street.

  • Member defence: Talking through mental health

Many tenants who join Living Rent may experience mental health issues, which can be exacerbated by the stress of the housing issues that they face, notably harassment, bad housing quality or deposit theft. This session is about knowing how to effectively sign post members who are experiencing mental health issues, but also talk through mental health and stress more generally after a long year and restrictions that have taken a toll on everyone. We will hear from members around 'mental health first aid', and how to support each other around mental health.

  • Our targets’ interests, financial position, or internal organisation can be quite opaque, hidden behind technical terms or not publicly accessible. This training session will look at how to ‘dig’ for more information, whether through Freedom of Information requests or using the site company house and at how to analyse planning documents and balance sheets. This session is meant as an introduction to corporate research and investigation, both of which can help understand our targets and inform our campaign strategies.
