Are you a resident in Govanhill? Do you want to build neighbourhood power from the ground up?Join your tenants' union and be part of the fight for better conditions in our community.

Living Rent’s Govanhill branch was established in June 2020 - in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic - to organise to improve the rights of tenants in both the private and social sector.

Since then, members have mobilised around our cleansing campaign to demand greater investment in services from Glasgow Council, fought and supported members and tenants to get repairs and stop evictions and stood with other local branches to fight cuts to council services across the city. Our membership is steadily growing as we agitate for the changes our community needs, together.

Our cleansing campaign staged a day of action in December 2020 and achieved a meeting with the head of Glasgow City Council. However, we are still waiting on firmer commitments and our demands for greater investments to be met and will continue organising until our demands are won! With COP26 just around the corner, the coming months are a critical time to unite and take action in our local branches and city-wide.

In March 2021, we held an online virtual branch launch, where members elected our committee. Our Organising Committee for 2021/22 is:

Kathleen - I'm the branch secretary. I'm responsible for branch administration, organising meetings and working with the rest of the committee to guide the branch's development.

Issy - I’m Co-membership Officer with Cameron. We are responsible for outreach, bringing new members into the branch, and linking them in with training, member defense & other Living Rent projects

Matt McDonald - I'm the co-member defence officer with Bethan. We are responsible for supporting tenants who are having problems with their tenancies in Govanhill, and training and building a team of members who can work alongside us

Kieran Pradeep - I’m the branch chair. I'm responsible to local members for chairing our meetings and working together with other branch officers to see our goals are achieved. My role is to represent the Govanhill Branch in public, and to encourage participation and respect for each other and the values of Living Rent.

Ruth Gilbert - I’m comms officer for the Govanhill branch, and work to ensure branch actions, campaigns and events are communicated clearly and widely across social media and press outlets. We are currently trying to grow our comms team, so if you are interested in getting involved get in touch.

Bethan - I share the role of member defence officer with Matt. We work with the rest of the member defence team to support members with their cases - resisting evictions, getting repairs done and deposit and illegal fees issues etc.

Cameron Beattie -  I’m one of the Membership Officers for the Govanhill Branch. I support members in doing outreach, whether that be at stalls, phone banking or door knocking, and help to make sure that all members are welcomed into the branch
