Aishat and her family moved into a Northwood property a little over two years ago, and within a month of moving in they noticed a leak in the primary bedroom ceiling and the hallway. Despite immediately raising the alarm to Northwood, it would take a year for the leak to be fixed.

Over the course of that year the leak led to water flooding Aishat's bedroom and the hallway, causing damp, mould, and mushrooms growing out of the walls.

Aishat and her family would have to wake up throughout the night to empty buckets of water, and spend time cleaning away mould just for it to come back.

Once the leak was fixed, despite Aishat begging Northwood to take action, it took a further year to fix the damage, wherein the whole front-facing wall of the bedroom had to be stripped back and replaced.

Despite the damage and disrepair, Aishat still had to pay £900 a month, amounting to over £20,000 in total. 

Now, Aishat has had enough and wants compensation for the suffering that herself and her family were put through, but Northwood has refused to sit down with us and find a solution.

“For  two years my family lived in a flat that had damp and mould harming our health, damaging our belongings, and disrupting our daily lives despite repeated reports to the letting agency Northwood. Being ignored and asking me to use the other room while issues dragged on, feels deeply unfair.

 

We are seeking accountability, including compensation for the rent we paid while living in these conditions and for the significant distress and hardship we have experienced.”
