Keep the freeze!

In October after years of pushing, Living Rent members won a rent freeze and eviction ban across Scotland!

We're only two months in AND we're already hearing of landlords threatening to hike up rent as soon as they can or threatening to kick tenants out as soon as they can. On top of that, tenants in joint tenancies are often forced to accept 'open market rents' as soon as a tenants wants to move out, and anyone seeking to move into a property is being hit by hikes of on average 18% year on year (in Edinburgh and Glasgow) but often much higher.

Social and council housing tenants are also concerned that the freeze will not apply to them as the freeze is currently set to end at the end of March and their rent increases on April 1st.

All this shows how badly we need the rent freeze and eviction ban to remain in place. We need to show the Scottish government the impact that the rent freeze has had and how much we need it to continue.

Share your testimony and share the form with your friends. Let's make sure our experiences gets heard and not landlords' cry for profits!

Oh, and has anyone else seen the description of “Tolerable Housing Standards” on .gov website? Rising damp. No hot water… !?

This government has moved social housing to the private sector by stealth. They just stopped building any more after stock was sold off. The least they should have done is legislate so we didnt become rent slaves to greedy landlords who know there is no social housing alternative.

It’s very disappointing that the Rent freeze is not being continued for another 6 or 12 months given the current Cost of Living Crisis. I believe that those in the Social rented sector should have been protected from an increase that is now inevitable later this year.

Freeze rent for all properties social and private. Wheatley homes shouldn’t put that rent ballot up every few years about rent hikes and when all Wheatley homes tenants blatantly says no to it, they should acknowledge that and it’s not a democratic procedure.

The government needs to stop “buy to rent” to avoid the greed of property owners, that dehumanise tenants, who are the vulnerable and poor working class . My previous landlord sent me a notice to leave after, after paying rent in that property for 8 years, so that they can increase the rental amount, far exceeding affordability and with the additional cost of living rising, my income could never cover these unnecessary increases. I would be beyond poor.

I’m an Aberdeen Council tenant and I haven’t been informed or consulted on anything about a rent increase.

My housing association (maryhill housing) plan to increase my rent from £314 to £345 for a studio flat. This increase will happen on 01/04/2024, 1 day after the freeze is due to end. With the cost of energy bills and groceries, I fear that I will no longer be able to afford to live in my home. This fills me with dread and anxiety, and I really hope the government will extend the freeze.
