New Deal For Tenants Workshop

In September, the Scottish government will announce new legislation to protect tenants called 'The New Deal for Tenants'.

We have been building and fighting for this legislation since 2016 and now we need to organise to push our MSPs to improve and vote for the legislation. The legislation at is stands is likely to include rent controls, joint tenancies, winter evictions, illegal evictions, keeping pets and redecorating our flats.
It seems to be mostly concerned with private tenants' rights. But we need it to go further. Come to this workshop to learn more about our demands and prepare for meetings with MSPs to pensure that they put our needs first.During the workshop, we will:
  • Go over problems faced by private tenants
  • Discuss Living Rent’s demands
  • Roleplay speaking to your MSP
  • Agreeing on next steps

Sorry I’m unable to attend tonight. I just wanted to comment on tax on 2nd property. I don’t think that will help the tenants. Rent caps to £500 max and no HMO, is the way this crisis should be dealt with. All councils should be responsible for the maintenance of every building and the landlords are responsible for the costs. The property market is monopolised by wealthy landlords. Those looking to buy, are significantly outbid by these greedy individuals. Capping rents to a max per property to £500, and costs of repairs and maintenance are billed to the landlords, by councils. This can be seen as a better option and maybe eliminate greedy, slum landlords. Therefore taxes to additional properties, will only increase the already unaffordable rents. Regulate rents by capping them to an affordable, and liveable £500 per property and outlaw HMO tenancy.
