The drastic fall in income during the Coronavirus pandemic has made paying rent as usual an impossibility for many tenants.
Despite government advice that landlords should be flexible and use compassion with their tenants, landlords in the private and social rented sectors continue to insist that rent be paid in full. The Scottish government are protecting landlords with a £5m fund for interest-free loans and mortgage holidays. Where is the protection for tenants? In their union!
Living Rent Member Defence teams have been supporting tenants to negotiate more suitable rental agreements, non-repayable rent reductions, and rent suspensions. So far, we have collectively won £30,000 worth of rent reductions.
