We need a rent freeze

Right now there is nothing to stop landlords from making huge profits whilst the rest of us struggle to make ends meet.

Rising rents are forcing people out of their homes, away from their loved ones, support systems and work.

The government’s role is to protect the public, but right now our housing system offers no security or protection for tenants. Heightened costs are putting pressure on renters and there is nothing to stop communities being torn apart as people are forced out of their homes.

Last autumn, the Scottish government passed the housing bill and with it permanent rent controls that will limit rent increases to inflation + 1% in rent controlled areas.

But it will be two years before tenants feel any sort of impact. In that time, we know landlords will do all they can to increase rents before the cap.

Four years ago, when the cost of living hit hard, Scotland introduced a rent freeze. Now, with the cost of living about to get far worse because of the war in Iran, we need this government to step up again and ensure that people are able to remain in their homes.

Sign this petition to call on the government to freeze rents now and protect people from poverty.

Tell the Scottish government that we need:

  • A rent freeze of 0% to cap rents until local authorities are able to introduce rent control areas.
  • A rent freeze that applies between tenancies to ensure landlords are not incentivised to evict tenants to increase rent.
  • An eviction ban so landlords do not evict tenants in order to increase rents.
  • Penalties for landlords who break the rules.
