This session will investigate how a fundamental human need – shelter – has been transformed into an object of speculation dominated by banks, real estate companies and financial institutions. We will look at how Scotland has been affected by these global trends, from the marketisation of public housing to the urban redevelopment projects transforming our cities.
As money moves across the world in search of profits from land and property, local communities are suffering the consequences: housing insecurity, debt, evictions, homelessness, rising rents, the sell off of public housing, and gentrification. The session will examine how the union’s everyday fights connect to this global system, and how we can target the actors responsible, from local governments to multinational companies.
Come to the meeting a few minutes early, so we can start sharp!
