Mould and Damp

Poor housing conditions with mould and damp can seriously affect your physical and mental health.

The NHS advise that people with damp and mould indoors are more likely to experience:

  • respiratory problems
  • respiratory infections
  • allergies
  • asthma

Damp and mould can also affect the immune system.

Children, the elderly, those with existing skin, respiratory or allergy issues and the immunocompromised are at even greater risk.

In Scotland, your landlord, housing association or local council is legally obligated to address any persistent damp and mould issues in your home.

We are Living Rent, Scotland's tenants and community union. Across our cities, teams of members work with one another to secure improvements to their housing situations using direct collective action. This means members are at the forefront of fighting to address their own issues. Over the years we have won thousands in compensation, stopped evictions, resisted rent hikes and won thousands of pounds worth of repairs.
If you have damp and mould or want to support those that do -
  1. Join up as a member today. We are a union and issues are addressed by members working collectively on solutions so your first step needs to be to join the union. Once you've joined the union, we can then provide you the help and support to improve your situation.
  2. Get in touch! Contact [email protected] or if you are in Edinburgh or [email protected] if you are in Glasgow.
  3. And then come along to your local member defence meeting. Our member defence sessions are where members come together to collectively resolve housing issues. Meetings are open to anyone with housing issues or who wants to work with others to win real changes.

If you are a Wheatley Homes tenant, we are gathering information about how Wheatley combat mould and damp. You can fill in our survey here.

We believe in the collective power of tenants to come together to fight for their rights, and use diverse tactics – including direct action when necessary – to achieve this.
